It was brought to my attention today that the first whale of the season was spotted off the coast of the Big Island on August 31. This is obviously quite strange and has been making me wonder, not only about the safety of the whale, but also why a whale would choose to come so early. Is the whale confused? Is it sick? Are things changing environmentally and giving the whale false cues to mirgrate? Is there a new food source moving closer to Hawaii? Is the season going to start early this year? Regardless, this is adding to my anticipation for the upcoming season!
